The reGAIN App has started a fashion recycling revolution and they want you to be part of it.
We’re regularly reminded about the negative effect things like single-use plastics and carbon emissions have on the environment, but we rarely hear about the impact of clothing.
According to statistics, around £140 million worth of clothing goes to landfill each year - that equates to 18,000 truckloads of clothing waste. That statistic is no surprise when you find out that 41% of people don’t know about recycling facilities for textiles.
However, a new app in the UK is encouraging shoppers to take a more sustainable approach when discarding old clothes by offering users a reward for doing so.
The reGAIN app allows shoppers to donate unwanted clothes for free, in return for discount codes that can be used at retailers. Brands including Missguided, PrettyLittleThing, New Look and Superdry are amongst the app’s retails partners.
More than 60% of householders in the UK say they have unwanted clothes and textiles stored away in their homes – if these clothes were disposed of and recycled properly, this would reduce the carbon, water and waste footprints of clothing consumption by 10-20% according to Clothes Aid.
“We don’t claim we are going to save the planet. But we are going to make it a bit better. A bit tidier and a bit more sustainable.” – ReGain
