As we approach the end of a hectic year, we’re already on the lookout for the latest social media trends for 2021. So, we’ve put together a summary of some of the key social media trends that you need to look out for in the new year.
Social Commerce (eCommerce via Social Media)
The concept has been circulating for a few years now, but it is predicted to finally take off in 2021 now that Instagram has joined Facebook in dedicating an entire section of the app to shopping. Tik Tok is the latest platform to follow its competitors into the eCommerce world as their new partnership with Shopify looks to monetize the platform in the new year.
This short and easy to consume content (also known as ‘snackable content’) is set to continue its popularity in 2021. We first experienced this type of content through Snapchat a few years ago, it has since then evolved into the ‘Stories’ feature that we are all familiar with by now. This trend is set to continue as users remain addicted to this low involvement form of entertainment.
It’s predicted that, on average, people will spend 100 minutes a day watching videos on social media in 2021 – that’s more than 19% higher than in 2020. This isn’t surprising as this trend has been growing for some time now and isn’t showing any signs of slowing down.
Recently, we saw Instagram introduce their answer to Tik Tok: ‘Reels’ - an almost identical feature that sits within the Instagram app. This is definitely something to look out for in 2021 as it brings a whole host of organic reach opportunities as Instagram will try to raise awareness of the feature to its users by showing more and more Reels content on feeds as the year goes on.
We are well accustomed to AI and it’s capabilities by now. This is the driving force behind the content that is served to each user and is utilised in facial recognition features. However, we are yet to see what else it could bring to the table – especially with the introduction of social commerce.
Whilst there has been a rise in demand for video content, there is also a surge in demand for authentic content. This originates from the ever-increasing lack of personal touch that society is acclimatising to due to the increased use of technology. Society is experiencing a mental health crisis due to the falsity of social media superstars, which is causing people to seek authentic content that is natural, positive, and representative of real life. This is a key factor for businesses going into 2021 as authenticity creates trust.
