Snapchat’s Geofilters have been a popular feature on the app since they first appeared back in December 2014 – fast forward 2 years; they’ve now evolved to enable businesses and events to promote their brand. They’re great for improving brand awareness in general but work especially well in the Retail and Hospitality industry.
Snapchat allows people to submit Geofilters for Community (Cities, Schools, Landmarks), Personal (Birthdays, Weddings, Parties and Holidays) and Business use. Want to create a Snapchat Geofilter for your business? Follow our simple steps below...
Open an image editing software like Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator.
Create a 1080 by 1920 pixel image with a transparent background, or click here to download one of the templates Snapchat provides.
Design your Geofilter but remember to leave enough free space available so Snapchatters can still see their image content behind the design. (Snapchat suggest you only use the top and/or bottom 25% of the screen) Also, make sure the design is in line with Snapchat’s guidelines.
Save your Geofilter using ‘Save>Save for Web (Legacy)’ from the File Menu and select the ‘PNG-24’ preset from the drop down. Make sure you save your image as a PNG so the background is transparent. It’s important to create a Geofilter with a transparent background so Snapchatters’ photos and videos can still be seen when the filter is in use.
Upload your filter using Snapchat’s On-Demand Geofilters tool here. You may need to log in first.
Select your start and end dates and times.
Draw your Geofence - this should cover the relevant area. (Keep in mind Geofilters work by using a few location indicators to determine where a user is and then showing all available filters in that area.)
Enter your payment information and submit your Geofilter to Snapchat. Once you’ve uploaded your image, you'll need to provide some basic information, including your name and email address. You'll also have to explain the reason for your Geofilter.
