Google Ads turned 20 years old last year but it's still one of the most popular ways to drive traffic to your website. The question is: should your business start a Google Ads Campaign, and how?
What Is Google Ads?
Google Ads (formerly known as Google AdWords) is a paid online advertising platform where businesses pay Google to increase the visibility of their website listing in Google’s search results, leading to increased website traffic. This is charged on a pay-per-click basis where payment is only due each time the advert is clicked on.
Is Google Ads Worth It?
If set up and implemented properly, Google Ads can take your business to the next level by attracting highly targeted users to your website and generating sales or leads. Get it wrong, however, and you could waste a large sum of money attracting irrelevant users who have no interest in purchasing your products or services.
One key point to consider is the price of your product. If your product is sold at a relatively low price, you may very quickly lose sight of your return on investment as it won’t take long to spend more on ads in comparison to what you’re gaining from each sale/lead – especially if the cost per click price is high plus added costs such as shipping. However, generally speaking, lower-priced items tend to sell more frequently than higher-priced items as the purchase requires a low level of involvement and commitment; so, you may see a return on investment relatively quickly if this is the case.
If the cost of your product is higher, then you may experience the opposite effect of lower-priced products (far less frequent purchases, but purchases made of a higher value). This will give you more breathing space as it will take a much higher amount of wasted ad spend to negatively affect your return on investment (as long as your ads do convert into sales, that is).
How Long Does It Take to Work?
The great thing about Google Ads is that results can appear very quickly upon set up and implementation. However, once the campaign is set up it will need constant monitoring, experimentation, and fine-tuning to ensure that it is performing at its optimum level.
How Do I Start a Google Ads Campaign?
The truth is that anyone can learn Google Ads, but this can be a very time-consuming process for businesses. Learning about how the platform works is just the beginning; it also takes time to undertake critical keyword research, set up the campaign (account, website, conversion tracking, create the adverts), and fine-tune the campaign.
