How to get back into the swing of it now Christmas is (almost) over

Yes, we know it’s only Boxing Day, but in a week’s time most of us will be back at work again and trying to get back into the swing of early mornings, early nights and battling through the long list of emails that have piled up in their inbox.

When you have a week of lie-ins, partying and chilling on the sofa eating Christmas chocolates, it can be really easy to get out of routine and let’s face it, forget what day it is! So when you’re alarm goes off at the crack of dawn on your first day back, we don’t blame you for thinking it’s a cruel prank, but unfortunately, this is not the case, and you’re going to have to throw yourself up and get back to it.

We’ve got some tips to help you deal with your return to work;

Embrace It

It has been proven that after any type of holiday people experience something referred to as ‘social jet lag’ which causes people to feel sluggish, demotivated, fatigued and experience difficulty in concentrating. The only way to overcome this emotion is to embrace it, it’s ok to feel a little sad after a holiday has passed, but remember this will only last a few days if that, so you can be reassured everything will be back on track before you know it.

Prioritise

When you get back into work, there will be a lot of things that need to be done, but you need to figure out which of these tasks are the most important and get these to the top of your list of priorities. This will help you get the week started in an organised manner and ensure you don’t forget to do anything that’s urgent.

Start Early

Ok, this one sounds a bit crazy, we’re talking about trying to get back into the habit of early mornings and we’re suggesting getting there even earlier than usual, but it’s for a good reason we promise. There can be a feeling of anxiety on the first day back, and the added traffic and stress of getting yourself settled isn’t what you need, if you set off slightly earlier than usual you can beat the traffic and get into the office in time to make yourself a cuppa and chill out before the work day ahead.

Plan Lunch

Breaks are especially important after a long break from work as you will really start feeling it by the afternoon, so make sure you try and get out of the office at some point for lunch. It might be that you plan to go out with a work friend so you have something to look forward to or even just bringing in your favourite meal that you’ve pre-prepared.

Listen to Music

Finding the perfect soundtrack can really help boost your concentration on your first day back, you just need to ensure that it’s not something you’ll fall asleep to and also not something you’ll get distracted by.

Chat

We don’t advise you doing much of this, however, having a chat with your colleagues on your break or in the morning when you get in about how your holidays were can actually be beneficial. It gives the workplace a much nicer atmosphere, therefore, making the day more enjoyable.
